Kuehne + Nagel buys Commodity Forwarders and Trillvane

LBR Staff Writer Published 19 July 2017

Kuehne + Nagel has expanded its perishable logistics operations with the acquisition of US-based Commodity Forwarders (CFI) and Kenya-based Trillvane.

Founded in 1974, CFI is engaged in the transportation and distribution of perishable products such as fresh or frozen, seafood, meat, flowers, foodstuffs and others.

With around 700 employees, the company operates 14 locations across the US, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Trillvane, which has around 130 employees, is involved in the export of flowers and vegetables.

The company operates location at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, which provides easy access to all major airlines for later cut-offs and shorter transit times.

Both deals are subject to customary closing conditions and clearance by the competent merger control authorities. Financial terms of the transactions were also not disclosed

CFI founder and CEO Alfred Kuehlewind said: “The planned transaction will offer us new growth perspectives and access to a global logistics network. Both companies’ customers will benefit from an extended service scope.”

Kuehne + Nagel International management board member Yngve Ruud said: “The two acquisitions mark another important step in our global perishable logistics strategy.

“These two transactions further strengthen and expand our fresh chain network connecting key production countries to major consumer markets. The business potential in the steadily growing global perishable sector is huge.”

In April, Kuehne + Nagel signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide global logistics services to the customers of Alibaba.com.

The logistics services will be offered to customers of the Chinese e-commerce leader’s B2B business unit.

With operations in around 100 countries, Kuehne + Nagel operates seafreight, airfreight, contract logistics and overland businesses.
